FOUR GREAT MOUNTAIN PASSES OF THE NORTHWEST OF VIETNAM TO EXPLORE
The northwestern region of Vietnam is well known for its abrupt terrain with plenty of massifs and huge mountain ranges creating long twisted mountain passes, posing difficult challenges to drivers.Among the meandering mountain passes of the northwest, the four greatest are Pha Din, O Quy Ho, Khau Pha and Ma Pi Leng.
The Pha Din pass
The Pha Din pass is 32km long on Highway 6 and part of it belongs to Phong Lai commune, Thuan Chau district, Son La province, while the rest is in Toa Tinh commune, Tuan Giao district, Dien Bien province. The name of the pass is derived from the Thai ethnic minority language in which Pha means the Sky and Din means the Earth. Pha Din is the place where the Earth meets the Sky.

The peak of Pha Din pass is 1,648m above sea level on arduous terrain, with mountain walls in one side and abysses in other side. This zigzag pass includes continuous ascents and descents with 8 very dangerous sharp curves of less than 15m radius and various blind, sharp and A or Z- shaped curves. Some curves are narrow, with room for only one car; thus, it would be very dangerous if another vehicle comes at a blind corner.
The Pha Din pass is always covered by clouds and at its foot there lie villages of ethnic minority groups. Looking down from the uphill part belonging to Dien Bien province, one can see Muong Quai Valley stretching in a large area of immense green mountains and hills interspersed with several villages of Tuan Giao district. Standing at the peak, one could see only the blue sky, none of the villages are in view. The blue sky and grand mountains seem to be locked to each other.
In Vietnam’s resistance war against the French invaders, the Pha Din mountain pass was one of important arterial roads to transfer munitions and food to the front in the Dien Bien Phu campaign (1954). In order to cut this route, the French General Christian de Castries decided to bombard Highway 6 of which the Pha Din mountain pass, and Coi Noi fork (the present national historical relic site in Mai Son district, Son La province) suffered the most losses. 8,000 young volunteers sacrificed their lives to protect this arterial road, turning Pha Din into a symbol of brave and tough spirit. At present, a stele stands to mark this historical event on the top of the Pha Din mountain pass.
The O Quy Ho mountain pass
The O Quy Ho mountain pass, also called Hoang Lien Son or May (Clouds) mountain pass, is located on Highway 4D, cutting across the Hoang Lien Son mountain range. The O Quy Ho mountain pass connects Lao Cai and Lai Chau with the boundary on the top of the mountain pass.
Legend has it that in the old time there lived a kind of bird whose song sounded like the words “o quy ho”. It was said that this sound reflected the unsuccessful love affair of a young couple. Over time, the pass was named after the bird’s singing “o quy ho”. The deserted mountain pass is about 2,000 meters above sea level.

In the past, few people dared to cross O Quy Ho Pass due to the frightening stories about people caught by tigers in the area. At present, though the pass has been upgraded and busy with vehicles, standing mountain walls and abysses on either side of the pass still make it a difficult driving challenge.
The Khau Pha mountain pass
With the length of over 30km, the Khau Pha mountain pass is the longest and the most dangerous pass along Highway 32. Located between the two districts of Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai of Yen Bai province, Khau Pha with the height from 1,200 to 1,500m above sea level, traverses a number of famous landmarks like La Pan Tan, Mu Cang Chai, Tu Le, Che Cu Nha and Nam Co.
Because the pass is always covered with thick fog, and its peak seems to rise sheer from the clouds, Khau Pha in the Thai ethnic minority language means the Sky Horn (a horn rising up to the sky) or the Heaven Gate. Meanwhile, the H’Mong ethnic people consider Khau Pha a place of supernatural power where God can hear human pleas. Thus, the H’Mong people often come to Khau Pha to pray whenever they have some problems in lives or lose their crops.

Regardless of these dangers, Khau Pha is still a destination for a large number of adventurous travellers, especially in September and November when yellow terraced fields are in harvest season.
The Ma Pi Leng mountain pass
With the length of 20km, the arduous Ma Pi Leng mountain pass, traversing the Ma Pi Leng mountain peak of 2,000m high in Dong Van plateau, is part of the Happy Road connecting Ha Giang city, Dong Van and Meo Vac towns.
The mountain pass was built by tens of thousands of young volunteers from 16 ethnic minorities in 8 southern provinces in 6 years (1959-1965). Especially, a heroic squad had to climb onto cliff walls to cut into the mountain little by little over 11 months to make the road passing the Ma Pi Leng mountain peak.
Ma Pi Leng in Mandarin language means “horse nose” because the sheer mountain peak is compared to a horse’s nose by the local people. Figuratively, the name means that the pass is too dangerous to climb even for horses. They might be exhausted climbing there, especially the pregnant ones.

Before the 1960s, over 80 thousand H’Mong (Meo) ethnic people living in the four districts behind the mountain grandeur of the Dong Van plateau had no concept of “road”. For many generations, the only way to pass Ma Pi Leng was to pile wattles on rocks to hang ropes and cling on these ropes to creep over nine rounds of craggy mountain slope path full of rugged rocks. The 9-round slope path to the Ma Pi Leng mountain peak is also called the Slope of God.
Though the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass, a part of the Happy Road, is not very long, it is the most arduous pass in the mountainous areas of the northern border. It is even dubbed “the King of Vietnam’s mountain passes”. At the beginning, the pass was only wide enough for pedestrians and horse-drawn carts. Later, it was widened so that cars and vans can go by. However, it is still very difficult and dangerous for two cars to avoid each other because of blind and sharp curves, and rough road.
The construction of the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass, including the 9-round slope, is really a miracle. Some even compare it to the Great Wall of China or a Pyramid. On the top of Ma Pi Leng, the highest point of the Happy Road, there is a stone stele with information on the construction of the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass, and also a place for people to enjoy a good view of this mountainous region.

DAY 01: HANOI – MAI CHAU – MOC CHAU
08:00 AM: Tour guide and driver of Vietmountain travel will pick you up at your hotel and departure to Mai Chau. On the way, you will stop at Thung Khe mountain pass to see the imposing scenery of the North- West, take a short beak.
Arrive in the village of Lac - Mai Chau. Have a delicious lunch with local food.
After lunch and relax, our tour guide will take you to visit the beautiful poetic valley of Mai Chau, discover the interesting customs of the “white Thai’ ethnic minority and the ways they make their unique brocades and handicraft articles.
Keep going to Moc Chau. Check in the room, have dinner with specialties of the North-West. After dinner, you can join in a important process to make good tea product. After that, you enjoy a hot tea that was just made by your own hands.

DAY 02: MOC CHAU
Have a breakfast, after that you will go to visit the Dong Son Moc Huong (Doi cave) that is considered the most beautiful one in the North-West of Vietnam. The next beauty spot is the pine forest of Ang village, a dreamlike place with immense green colour of pines and a big beautiful lake. Besides, you will enjoy the glamour of the beautiful rolling hills of wild flowers, gardens of plump-trees, peach-trees…
Have a lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you will visit Dai Yem waterfall. Then depart to the hill of tea cultivation. It’s one of the most famous tea hill of Vietnam.

DAY 03: MOC CHAU – SON LA

DAY 04: SON LA – MU CANG CHAI TREKKING
After breakfast, you will depart to Mu Cang Chai – Yen Bai province. Mu Cang Chai is famous with beautiful terrace fields. Terraced rice fields of Mu Cang Chai have been ranked as national relics by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2007. Arrive at Mu Cang Chai. Enjoy lunch with local food.
In the afternoon, start trekking from Che Cu Nha commune to La Pan Tan Commune. This trek will definitely offer us a good opportunity to see the main spots and admire the beauty of amazing rice terraces that Mu Cang Chai has to offer. We will also be able to visit a few villages of the H’mong hill tribe scattered in the area.
Back to Mu Cang Chai town for dinner and overnight in hotel.

DAY 05: MU CANG CHAI – SAPA – TA VAN VILLAGE
After breakfast, we depart to Sapa. Stop in O Quy Ho Pass for taking photos. Arrival Sapa, have a lunch in local restaurant.
After lunch, you start trekking down to Lao Chai village of Black H’mong ethnic people. Here you will discover their daily life. After Lao Chai you walk to Ta Van village of Dzay people with their rich culture and beautiful houses located on rice terrace. Here you will enjoy the fresh air, see terraced fields, stream, discover and visit some Black H’mong families. In the evening, enjoy dinner with music and soft drinks. Stay one night with a local family in the village.

DAY 06: CAT CAT - HAM RONG – BAC HA TOWN
After breakfast, you leave Ta Van and go to Cat Cat village. Upon arrival explore Cat Cat villages, inhabited by the H’mong people, a French colonial area and a renowned resort for officials from the early 20th century. Learn about the culture and customs of H’mong people including traditional crafts such as weaving, carved silver and hand-forged agricultural tools.
After that, your leave Cat Cat village to explore the Ham Rong Mountain with unspoiled scenery and spectacular. At here, you can visit many kinds of colorful orchid garden from Indochina area. Passing two Heaven Gate, visitors will be arriving in the top of Ham Rong is called Pitch Cloud, and have panoramic view of Sapa.
At noon, have lunch in a local restaurant. Transfer to Bac Ha town.
Arrival Bac Ha town. You will go to visit the H'mong King's house (King Hoang A Tuong) built by the French colonists and the Chinese in 1920.

DAY 07: BAC HA – XIN MAN – HOANG SU PHI – HA GIANG
After breakfast, depart to Ha Giang city. On the way, we will stop in Xin Man for taking pictures with amazing terrace fields. Move on to Hoang Su Phi for lunch. Hoang Su Phi is also famous with beautiful rice terrace. After lunch and village, we depart to Ha Giang city. Along the way we may encounter the Nung, Tay, Red Dao, La Chi and Co Lao, just some of the many hill tribe groups who have settled there.
Enjoy dinner and overnight in Ha Giang.

DAY 08: HA GIANG – SA PHIN – DONG VAN
The remote region of Dong Van and Meo Vac is a land of rugged mountains and beautiful hill villages which are unchanged for centuries. Today we head north west out of Ha Giang Town towards this northernmost tip of Vietnam.
The former H'mong royal house at Sa Phin is a primary attraction of the region but the blend of hill tribe people's colorful costumes and the majestic mountainous scenery make this long and bumpy trip an unforgettable experience.

DAY 09: DONG VAN – MA PI LENG PASS – MEO VAC – BAO LAC
An absolutely unforgettable day! It starts with the visit of the market of Dong Van, where the locals shop before returning to their eagle nest. If market is not available, you will visit villages nearby. Which climbs on 15 km up to the top of the Ma Pi Leng Pass, through a gigantic maze of lime peaks, "stone forests", and canyons unique in the world. We then go down into the valley of Meo Vac. Meo Vac is inhabited by various ethnic minorities including the H'mong, Tay, Dao ...Afternoon, Car continue to transfer you to Bao Lac Town for check in hotel and relax.

The Bao Lac district is located in the far north Cao Bang province of Vietnam. Close to the border with China. Travelling in this area offers you an opportunity to savor fabulous scenery, to discover rare ethnic minorities and maybe to share some hardship and laughter with them.
Bao Lac village, inhabited by Lolo, is 15 km from the Chinese border. Have a lunch in Bao Lac.

DAY 11: CAO BANG – BAN GIOC WATERFALLS – BA BE LAKE
Morning, you’ll visit the Ban Gioc Waterfall on the China-Vietnam border, 85km from Cao Bang, passing through attractive scenery en-route. Ban Gioc is one of the largest and possibly the most impressive waterfalls of Vietnam.
After lunch and relax, we continue start walking downhill to the foot of the mountain where our private car is waiting for you for transfer to Ba Be lake located 145km far away, nested in the middle of Ba Be National Park.Have dinner and overnight in homestay.

DAY 12: BA BE LAKE
The legendary lake of Ba Be is just one continuous water body although the name means'' three lakes''. Today we embark on a boat cruising down the Nang River which is the main water source of the lake. This exciting river trip will give us a taste of the tranquil countryside and an enjoyable exploration of the Ba Be National Park. We traverse en route the Poong Grotto before stopping at some nearby hill tribe villages and getting off the beaten track to the scenic Dau Dang Waterfalls. DAY 13: BA BE – PAC BO – LANG SON
Heading out of town , we make our way north to the historical cave of Pac Po where Ho Chi Minh set up the headquarter for the August Vietnamese Revolution in 1945. After seeing this vestige site we continue our journey past the many hill villages and the tranquil town of Dong Khe and That Khe. The drive will deliver us into Lang Son by late afternoon. This border town had been all destroyed during the recent Sino - Vietnamese war, but was rebuilt to become an important trade center in north eastern region.

DAY 14: LANG SON – HALONG BAY
The lively central market of Lang Son and depart for Halong bay, truly one of Vietnam's most impressive scenic sights. In the afternoon we arrive in Cat Ba Island. Our vehicle is waiting for us in the wharf; we transfer to the hotel and relax. Or we spend our time at the beautiful beach on the island.

DAY 16: CAT BA ISLAND - HANOI
After having breakfast we visit the Cat Ba National Park with the old Military Hospital cave that was used by the North Vietnamese Army during the American war. We will return to Cat Ba Township before boarding on speed boat for more than an hour riding to Vietnam's largest sea port and third largest city, Hai Phong. Transfer Hanoi.

Passing two Heaven Gate, visitors will be arriving in the top of Ham Rong is called Pitch Cloud, and have panoramic view of Sapa.

Arrival Bac Ha town. You will go to visit the H'mong King's house (King Hoang A Tuong) built by the French colonists and the Chinese in 1920.

DAY 07: BAC HA – XIN MAN – HOANG SU PHI – HA GIANG
After breakfast, depart to Ha Giang city. On the way, we will stop in Xin Man for taking pictures with amazing terrace fields. Move on to Hoang Su Phi for lunch. Hoang Su Phi is also famous with beautiful rice terrace. After lunch and village, we depart to Ha Giang city. Along the way we may encounter the Nung, Tay, Red Dao, La Chi and Co Lao, just some of the many hill tribe groups who have settled there.
Enjoy dinner and overnight in Ha Giang.

DAY 08: HA GIANG – SA PHIN – DONG VAN
The remote region of Dong Van and Meo Vac is a land of rugged mountains and beautiful hill villages which are unchanged for centuries. Today we head north west out of Ha Giang Town towards this northernmost tip of Vietnam.
The former H'mong royal house at Sa Phin is a primary attraction of the region but the blend of hill tribe people's colorful costumes and the majestic mountainous scenery make this long and bumpy trip an unforgettable experience.

DAY 09: DONG VAN – MA PI LENG PASS – MEO VAC – BAO LAC
An absolutely unforgettable day! It starts with the visit of the market of Dong Van, where the locals shop before returning to their eagle nest. If market is not available, you will visit villages nearby. Which climbs on 15 km up to the top of the Ma Pi Leng Pass, through a gigantic maze of lime peaks, "stone forests", and canyons unique in the world. We then go down into the valley of Meo Vac. Meo Vac is inhabited by various ethnic minorities including the H'mong, Tay, Dao ...Afternoon, Car continue to transfer you to Bao Lac Town for check in hotel and relax.

DAY 10: BAO LAC – CAO BANG
The Bao Lac district is located in the far north Cao Bang province of Vietnam. Close to the border with China. Travelling in this area offers you an opportunity to savor fabulous scenery, to discover rare ethnic minorities and maybe to share some hardship and laughter with them.
Bao Lac village, inhabited by Lolo, is 15 km from the Chinese border. Have a lunch in Bao Lac.
Afternoon, you’ll arrive in Cao Bang town to check in to a hotel in Cao Bang Town, where we can relax to be ready for next imaging day.

DAY 11: CAO BANG – BAN GIOC WATERFALLS – BA BE LAKE
Morning, you’ll visit the Ban Gioc Waterfall on the China-Vietnam border, 85km from Cao Bang, passing through attractive scenery en-route. Ban Gioc is one of the largest and possibly the most impressive waterfalls of Vietnam.
After lunch and relax, we continue start walking downhill to the foot of the mountain where our private car is waiting for you for transfer to Ba Be lake located 145km far away, nested in the middle of Ba Be National Park.Have dinner and overnight in homestay.

DAY 12: BA BE LAKE
The legendary lake of Ba Be is just one continuous water body although the name means'' three lakes''. Today we embark on a boat cruising down the Nang River which is the main water source of the lake. This exciting river trip will give us a taste of the tranquil countryside and an enjoyable exploration of the Ba Be National Park. We traverse en route the Poong Grotto before stopping at some nearby hill tribe villages and getting off the beaten track to the scenic Dau Dang Waterfalls. Dinner with a family of Tay at homestay in Bac Ngoi village.

DAY 13: BA BE – PAC BO – LANG SON
Heading out of town , we make our way north to the historical cave of Pac Po where Ho Chi Minh set up the headquarter for the August Vietnamese Revolution in 1945. After seeing this vestige site we continue our journey past the many hill villages and the tranquil town of Dong Khe and That Khe. The drive will deliver us into Lang Son by late afternoon. This border town had been all destroyed during the recent Sino - Vietnamese war, but was rebuilt to become an important trade center in north eastern region.
Overnight in Lang Son.

DAY 14: LANG SON – HALONG BAY
The lively central market of Lang Son and depart for Halong bay, truly one of Vietnam's most impressive scenic sights. Upon arriving in Ha Long City, take all stuff we move to our junk, check in private cabin with A/C, following fresh seafood lunch while boat cruising through amazing landscape of cliff stone mountains emerge from green crystal water, spend the afternoon time for visiting biggest cave in Halong Bay, swimming, relaxing at the beach other enjoy kayaking to explore lagoon, dinner and overnight on boat.

DAY 15: HALONG BAY – CAT BA ISLAND
After breakfast we check out our cabin move transit boat enjoy almost a full day on the calm waters of Ha Long Bay to explore Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay with thousands of lime-stone mountains. In the afternoon we arrive in Cat Ba Island. Our vehicle is waiting for us in the wharf; we transfer to the hotel and relax. Or we spend our time at the beautiful beach on the island.

DAY 16: CAT BA ISLAND - HANOI
After having breakfast we visit the Cat Ba National Park with the old Military Hospital cave that was used by the North Vietnamese Army during the American war. We will return to Cat Ba Township before boarding on speed boat for more than an hour riding to Vietnam's largest sea port and third largest city, Hai Phong. Transfer Hanoi.
Arrival Hanoi. The tour ends.
